“You’re doing a great job.”
That’s all parents like Judy (name changed for privacy) want to hear when they enter the emergency room or find themselves on the line with USA and Canada Poison Control Number after a thoughtless encounter with a household product that toddlers, preschoolers, and Alzheimer’s-ridden seniors have access to every day.
Instead, parents are now facing a different tune. A new set of standards. One authorities believe they should adhere to, even if they don’t realize the implications upfront.
As with every other time Judy brought her 4-year-old daughter to the ER, she expected a long wait and a lot of sympathy.
What she received instead left her in absolute shock.
“Usually the nurses say, ‘How’s it going, mama?’ ‘You’re doing great!’ ‘We know this is hard!’ and ‘Sorry for the long wait, would you like some water?’”
Instead, Judy was met with a parent’s second worst fear:
A social worker walked into the room.
And that’s when she realized she could have prevented this tragedy, her daughter’s illness, and the involvement of child protective services in her otherwise thriving family if she actually paid attention to the news.
It was a normal Saturday for Judy and her four children.
Get the house in order. Head to the park. Maybe bring the family out for dinner when her husband arrives home.
She certainly had her hands full with four children ages 2 to 7, but she felt prepared to handle the chaos most days.
That was until she saw a blue-green goo oozing down her otherwise healthy and highly intelligent four-year-old daughter’s chin.
“Mama, I don’t feel so good.”
Judy quickly put two and two together, buckled the kids into her car, and called her daughter’s pediatrician on the way to the ER.
Because of the toxicity associated with laundry detergent pods, and the especially fragile nature of the digestive systems of children under 7 years old, Judy’s daughter and family were quickly escorted to a room.
“I thought things were fine,” said Judy. “That they’d help her and she’d be okay.”
What happened next was a shock to her and her husband, who arrived shortly after.
A knock on the door quickly brought in a non-medical professional. A social worker. More specifically, a family investigator.
She wanted to know what the parents had done to prevent their daughter from ingesting laundry pods.
Were they locked up? From all of the kids? What about other chemicals in the house?
What started as a medical emergency quickly turned a family’s life upside down.
“We were told they were going to show up to our home, and potentially remove the kids, if we didn’t take better precautions to protect them against dangerous or potentially fatal exposure to cleaning supplies — including laundry pods.”
After answering a few questions, Judy and her husband both agreed:
They could have done better.
While their 4-year-old was strong enough to withstand the often tragic outcomes associated with laundry pod ingestion, Judy and her husband still had to take action.
A quick search on Amazon brought up a lot of laundry pod storage options, but only one that actually looked strong enough to withstand her more audacious children’s attempts at opening it.
“It was so simple. I could have bought this in minutes. Before I exposed my daughter to toxins. Before our family’s lives were turned upside down.”

While Judy said, “There are some laundry pod holders from name brands I already know, but the reviews about the locking mechanisms quickly told me what I needed to know; if I was looking for the best way to keep my children from eating laundry pods, this locking laundry pod storage was it.”
Sunpenny was available for comment, “We are not a big company. It’s really just Mom and me and a team of safety engineers who created this childproofing product in the hopes of ending the preventable tragedy we have seen from kids eating Tide Pods. We are truly grateful it has helped so many parents childproof their laundry room against curious kids; and how it has helped so many adult children care for their senior parents with dementia or Alzheimer’s as well.”
Sunpenny 2-in-1 Laundry Pod and Dryer Sheets Storage with Safety Latches and Locks can be found by searching on Amazon. “All that we ask is that you very carefully compare your options,” said Sunpenny cofounder. “There’s a lot of copycats out there right now whose laundry detergent storage don’t hold up, providing horrifically false safety that leads to even more preventable tragedy, and parents who feel and look guilty as well.”
Poison Control agrees, citing that they receive a call regarding laundry-related illness once every 44 minutes.
One parent’s comment to Sunpenny was, “It’s so easily preventable. So easy. It’s a really secure box. With a lock. You wouldn’t leave a gun unlocked around little kids and seniors; we don’t know why parents would leave their laundry pods unlocked either.”
In the wake of the increase in recent tragedies, Sunpenny is offering a discount of 10% off on Amazon for as long as they can manage to take the hit.
“We don’t really make a profit from this, you know. We’re actually still paying for the product creation and taking it to market, and getting the word out. We’d like to make enough to roll out other safety products that save parents’ sanity and children’s lives, but we’re offering a discount right now because it’s needed. Lots of tight family budgets doesn’t mean those families don’t need to protect their kids. It’s the least we could do.”
