We see them everywhere.
Influencers touting products, meant to move skeptical parents from ‘thinking about it’ to ‘buying’.
One influencer got more than she bargained for when searching for products.
“I stumbled upon this really pretty laundry pod organizer. It’s not something I would ever consider promoting. The company is really small and run by a son and his mom. Although it’s really sweet, and a great idea, I only promote high profit products…”
Little did she know, that pretty little laundry organizer would save her child’s life.
“I didn’t really think much about the lock. I just liked the look.”
That was before she found her 5 year old son sitting on the floor with an empty bag of Tide Pods.
“I know Tide does everything they can to deter kids from eating them. Tons of media prevention campaigns. Warning labels on every bag of pods. Far better than many of the other laundry pod companies. But Parents have to play a role too.”
At first her heart skipped a beat.
“Seriously, the room began spinning. Here I was, thinking I was such a good mom. And my child managed to sneak a bag of empty pods down.”
“What if it were full?”
Her panic only grew when her son asked her,
“Mom, why did you eat all the blue candy?”
Turns out her son, one of the smartest kids in the class, overheard another child talking about the, “Blue candy above the washing machine,” and decided to go find this “candy” himself.
“Again, I don’t blame Tide for anything. Or the other laundry pod companies. I only purchased this because I love the farmhouse look. I didn’t realize it could save my child’s life.”
Thankfully she had already locked the laundry detergent pods away in her Sunpenny laundry organizer.
“I thought it was weird, you know, maybe a little neurotic to use the latches and locks, but I’m really glad I did.”
Although she wants to remain anonymous, “I feel a little sheepish that I thought about looks and profits over my own child’s safety,” she recently recorded a video on her channel for Sunpenny, as a thank you.
“Really, it’s a great product. They did an excellent job of designing a beautiful farmhouse-style laundry room organizer with a lock that keeps my little guy safe, without it uglying up my laundry room.”
According to the Poison Control Number Hotline, Sunpenny is onto something.
USA Poison Control receives a call from an overwhelmed parent or adult child caring for a senior with Alzheimer’s or Dementia – get this – an incredible one time every 44 minutes.
We asked mom, “What would you say to parents who think it won’t happen to them?”
“I wish I could warn everyone.”
“I mean, you think it will never happen to you. You hope it won’t. But there he was, sitting on the floor looking for ‘blue candy’. And this is a smart kid! Kids are easily influenced. I mean, what if I hadn’t closed the latch or lock?”
Sunpenny Co-Founders Neil and his mom started inventing child proofing devices long before nine young children and seniors with Alzheimer’s recently died from eating laundry soap pods.
“These tragedies; these little lives lost, are so preventable,” said Neil, “I mean we’re just middle class people who invested our personal savings into trying to prevent this tragedy.”
And even though they aren’t making any real profit off their child proofing invention yet, Neil swears knowing that they are saving families from having their lives turned upside down is, “Worth it.”
His one concern:
“We have many copycats coming to market from foreign countries that couldn’t care less about whether or not children live or die. They see massive potential. But they don’t have our design, nor our durability against some of the crazier things kids do. And we’re really worried that parents will think it’s the same thing; that a knock-off laundry pod holder is the same as a Sunpenny child danger prevention storage container.”
“People can easily search Sunpenny Laundry Pod Holder with Lock on Amazon and find us. Just make sure it’s Sunpenny. We’ve purchased a few of the cheaply made others, and the low-quality of those products just puts kids further at risk.”
His final words:
“We hope parents take action. Real action. To protect their children. Not just buy something that gives an illusion of safety. We’re dedicated to reinvesting profits to create more products we know will save lives. And if that’s not enough for parents, it’s a truly beautiful organizer; many people purchase one for their laundry room then circle back to purchase additional Sunpenny’s for their kitchen and bathrooms, and the homes of their friends and family.”
